![]() ![]() EAX wasnt good anyway, it had a loud echo that was excessive IMO. You can listen to it here compared to MSS: I think nothing of value was lost. The current Miles system does a terrible job of emulating those EAX effects, particularly the handling of smooth transitions between environments and reverb. Heres a very brief comparison I did of my own ages ago: Disregard how muffled the EAX mode sounds. This was done on a Creative X-Fi and I suspect something with the HW layer didnt play well with FRAPS; it doesnt sound like that in game. Instead, pay particular attention to the transition between the cave and the outdoor environment. Wiith the Miles system you can actually hear the exact moment it switches over from the cave reverb to the more airy outdoor effects, whereas with EAX it transitions smoothly between them, even overlapping a bit. You say EAX has a lot of echo, which is true, but at least it sounds natural compared to the mechanical pwoing pwoing pwoing of the players footsteps inside the cave. Lastly, and this doesnt really come out in Youtube clips, but the positional accuracy is far superior with the hardware audio. Eax Disabled Miles Sound System Chaser Game Full Volume InOne of the things I noticed immediately when they switched to Miles was that there doesnt seem to be any basic right and left stereo positioning; everything just blasts you full volume in both ears no matter where the source originated from. Ultimately, its a matter of taste as you say, but for me these things all combined to make the game audio very fatiguing to me. Its the primary reason why I stopped playing the Steam version of the game and just went back to retail. If it doesnt work on your end, theres probably something wrong with your setup. The example in your video does sound a bit better in EAX while MSS sounds like youre in a pipe. Theres a really terrible blaring echo with EAX -- unplayable IMO. There is excellent stereo positioning in MSS and I can hear it. Im not the only one who had this complaint and its followed me across multiple setups with different hardware combinations. ![]() It may be an exaggeration to say there is no directional sound with the Miles system but it definitely sounds compressed and more in your head by comparison. I can understand why people dont like the reverb effects though.
